It's time to vote for The Desert Sun Athlete of the Week

It’s time once again for The Desert Sun Athlete of the Week where we give you the candidates and you vote for your favorite.

Before we dive into this week’s honorees, though, let’s look back at last week’s winner. You voted and you chose Rancho Mirage soccer’s Emilio Lucio and his hat-trick against La Quinta.

As always, this week’s winner is up to you. Simply read the accomplishments of this week’s five candidates and vote for your favorite in the poll attached to the bottom of this story at desertsun.com. Whoever has the most votes at noon on Saturday will be the winner.

Here are this week’s candidates in alphabetical order. Happy voting!

Ivan Camargo, Coachella Valley wrestling

What he did: Camargo took the title at 165 pounds at the Ralph Harris Invitational in La Habra, helping the Arabs to a second-place overall finish. He also helped CV take down rival Indio in a head-to-head matchup.

Yanet Fuentes, Palm Springs soccer

What she did: Fuentes, the Indians’ goalkeeper is on a roll. The Indians have gone 2-0-1 in their last three games and have not allowed any goals. There was a 5-0 win over Rancho Mirage, a 1-0 win over Shadow Hills in which she had five saves and handed the Knights their first league loss, and a 0-0 double overtime tie against La Quinta.

Andie Munoz, La Quinta wrestling

What she did: Munoz won the championship of the 155-pound weight class at the Trojan War tournament in Yucca Valley. Munoz won all of her matches by pin, including a seven-second pin in the semifinal. In the final, she pinned her opponent from Sultana in 2:52.

Mark Ramirez, Palm Desert wrestling

What he did: Ramirez was clutch all weekend at the Temecula Valley Battle for the Belt, making it all the way to the championship match at 106 pounds before finishing runner-up. Every match was tight, he won 3-0, 12-9, 12-8 and then beat the No. 1 seed in overtime after a 6-6 tie in regulation in the semifinal. He came one point away, dropping the title match 7-6.

Miranda Rodriguez, Shadow Hills soccer

What she did: Rodriguez, a talented junior for the first-place Knights scored a goal in back-to-back 2-0 wins for Shadow Hills as they took down Rancho Mirage and La Quinta in a quest to stay atop the DEL standings.
