A person who walked away from a Downriver adult foster care facility was found dead in the Detroit River on Thursday, Jan. 15, according to police.
At approximately 1:16 p.m., the Wyandotte Police Department contacted Grosse Ile police dispatch after receiving a report from a caller who believed they saw a body floating in the water near Latitudes Restaurant in Wyandotte, which overlooks the Detroit River, according to a news release from the Grosse Ile Police Department.
At 1:27 p.m., the Grosse Ile Police Department deployed a drone to assist in the search. At 2:11 p.m., the drone located a subject floating north of the Grosse Ile Toll Bridge, according to the news release. Authorities have not yet released the identity or any details on the victim.
At 2:12 p.m., the Grosse Ile Fire Department was dispatched for a water recovery in the Trenton-Grosse Ile Channel of the Detroit River, and the U.S. Coast Guard was notified.
At approximately 3 p.m., the fire department completed recovery of the individual. The person was transported to the Elizabeth Park Marina, and the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office took custody of the individual from there.
The person who died was identified as an individual who was reported missing earlier in the day after walking away from an adult foster care facility in Wyandotte on Jan. 15, according to the news release.
The incident remains under investigation by the Wyandotte Police Department in cooperation with the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office. No foul play is suspected, according to the news release.
This is at least the second time this month a Wayne County adult has gone missing and was found dead. Earlier this month, Dearborn Heights launched a search for Yousif Hassan Naim, a 30-year-old man with autism. On Jan. 8, Dearborn Heights Mayor Mo Baydoun posted on Facebook that more than 200 members of the community joined in a 26-hour search effort to search for Naim, who was found dead. A body was found in the Rouge River around the same time as the search effort for Niam ended on Jan. 8. Police did not immediately confirm the person found was Niam, but said on Jan. 8 the body found appeared to match the description of the man for whom they were searching.
