PEORIA — Construction of a popular coffee chain location is expected to begin in Peoria early this year.
Work on a Dutch Bros location at the intersection of War Memorial Drive and University Street in Peoria is expected to begin in March or April, Peoria City Councilman Alex Carmona told the Journal Star.
Carmona, whose 2nd District is home to the development, said the Dutch Bros location is targeting an opening date in the fall.
“There are many steps in the development process that can cause delays but at the end of the day I am very happy that this project is still moving forward,” Carmona told the Journal Star. “I have seen the positive impact that a Dutch Brothers franchise can do to an area and I’m hoping that this will be the first step in revitalizing the vacant lots that they are building next to as well as the vacancies that we see on University (Street) close to that intersection.”
Approval for the Dutch Bros development, which could also see a second drive-thru style restaurant built, was somewhat controversial because of concerns over traffic patterns at the busy Peoria intersection.
The Peoria City Council approved plans for traffic flow to the business in May, putting no traffic restrictions on the location. Controversially, that included allowing left-turn access to the site from University Street, something city staff had opposed.
