Lee County government, school board critic dies: What we know

Lee County has lost one of its more outspoken governmental critics.

Joe Phillips died, said a Jan. 10 Facebook post.

“Our friend Joe Phillips has passed away, way too soon, leaving his wife and young daughter in unspeakable grief, traumatized, and in financial uncertainly,” the post said.

There’s also a GoFundMe link to help the family defray expenses.

The community began mourning in Facebook comments.

“The world lost a protector for our community. We lost a friend. Now Joe is with Jesus,” wrote Denise Nystrom.

“May he rest in Peace!” said Marina Church. “He was a strong Leader, who spoke up with his kind heart! Prayers to his wife and family.”

Theresa Nall Wagner added: “What a massive loss to the community ― praying for his family.”

How to donate

Family and friends are seeking $20,000. The GoFundMe post said:

“Joe Phillips, known to many as Smoking Joe from the Cracker Culture Podcast, suffered a catastrophic heart attack and is currently hospitalized at Gulf Coast Medical Center,” it said before his death.

“Joe was found unresponsive in the school pickup line while waiting for his daughter, Addy. CPR was performed on site before he was rushed to the hospital. It is difficult to put into words how close this came to being a very different story. Joe survived the initial event, but the road ahead is uncertain.

“Doctors have determined Joe needs a cardiac stent, however his larynx must heal first before that procedure can safely be performed. To stabilize his heart in the meantime, Joe is scheduled to receive a pacemaker. There is also a very real and sobering truth: there is a chance Joe may not survive the procedure.”

Joe Phillips the gadfly

Phillips in March 2025 appeared at a Lee County School Board meeting to object to a $180,000 lobbying contract.

“Every one of you vehemently stated that you were opposed to the school board being political and having more government,” Phillips said at a public school board, as quoted in a News-Press story.

“Yet tonight, you’re here to add an additional lobbyist firm that you all have ties to. How is it possible that you can vote when there’s clearly a conflict of interest?”

And in August 2024, Phillips joined other Lee residents to protest consultant Terry Miller. Phillips and others directed their grievances toward Miller, saying he helped elect dozens of Republicans to public office.

No funeral or memorial was yet available for Phillips.
