Weather forecast calls for early freezing rain turning to rain in Canton

Snow and freezing rain are likely before 11 a.m. today in the Canton area.

The National Weather Service forecast says rain will follow as temperatures rise to a high near 44. A southeast wind at 10 to 13 mph will turn southwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 23 mph. The chance of precipitation is 90%. A total daytime ice accumulation of less than a 10th of an inch is possible. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

The weather service says freezing rain is more dangerous than snow, as ice can form on pavement. Branches and utility lines may fall. Motorists are advised to use extreme caution during these conditions.

On the night of Dec. 26, there is a chance of rain, mainly before 7 p.m. Expect clouds, a low around 32 and a northwest wind at 5 to 10 mph. The chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a 10th of an inch are possible.

The weekend will be warmer, with a forecast high of 56 degrees and a 100% chance of rain on Dec. 28.

Here’s the National Weather Service forecast for the Canton area through New Year’s Day.

Dec. 27: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. Light and variable wind becoming southeast around 5 mph in the afternoon. At night, there is a chance of rain after 1 a.m. It will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 32 and an east wind at 5 to 7 mph. The chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a 10th of an inch are possible.

Dec. 28: A high near 56, a southeast wind at 8 to 11 mph and a 100% chance of precipitation. New precipitation amounts between a quarter of an inch and half of an inch are possible. At night, expect rain and a low around 40. The chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between three quarters of an inch and one inch are possible.

Dec. 29: Rain and snow are likely, becoming all snow after 1 p.m. It is expected to be cloudy and breezy with a high near 43. The chance of precipitation is 70%. At night, there is a chance of snow before 1 a.m. It will be breezy and mostly cloudy with a low around 20. The chance of precipitation is 40%.

Dec. 30: It will be mostly cloudy with a high near 27. At night it will be mostly cloudy with a low around 21.

Dec. 31: There is a chance of snow under mostly cloudy skies, with a high near 29. The chance of precipitation is 30%. At night, the chance of snow remains. It is expected to be mostly cloudy with a low around 16. The chance of precipitation is 30%.

Jan. 1: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 24.
