Dolphins benching Tua Tagovailoa, plan to start rookie QB, per report

The Miami Dolphins plan to bench quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and start seventh-round rookie Quinn Ewers on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

On Tuesday, Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said “everything is on the table” at the quarterback position after a rough night for Tagovailoa in a 28-15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“We’re trying to determine who will give us the best chance to win,” McDaniel said. “You just really have a standard and when that standard is not being met, something’s got to give and we’re looking for clarity on that because it’s not where I want it to be.”

Tagovailoa leads the NFL in interceptions with 15 and the Dolphins rank No. 26 in passing yards.

Ewers, 22, has spent much of the season as the emergency third quarterback option for the Dolphins, but briefly supplanted Zach Wilson as the No. 2 player on the depth chart. After an October competition between the two in practice, Ewers was bumped back down to No. 3.

During his time as Tagovailoa’s primary backup, Ewers played late in a blowout loss to the Cleveland Browns. He completed five of his eight passes for 53 yards, fumbled twice, and was sacked twice.
