Surprise! Downtown Green Bay shows up in Netflix Christmas movie

It’s not hard to guess who the scene stealers are in a movie called “Christmas on the Alpaca Farm,” but before the first fluffy face ever shows up, keep your eyes peeled and you’ll get a glimpse of Green Bay.

Downtown’s riverfront with the Ray Nitschke Memorial Bridge and Bart Starr Memorial Bridge lit in red and green makes a brief appearance in the film that’s streaming on Netflix.

You can’t be wrapping gifts or decorating cookies with one eye and watching the movie with the other if you’re going to catch it, because it’s a quick but pretty aerial shot of the Fox River and CityDeck. It comes about nine minutes into the film during a random series of scene-setting winter shots.

There’s no direct connection to Green Bay in the movie, which was filmed in Canada, and follows Jess, a New York City Christmas sweater designer who makes her way upstate to Flannery Farms in search of alpaca fleece as she aims to win the Runway to Christmas fashion competition. It’s a wholesome Hallmark-style film, so there’s romance, a career dream on the line and the chance to save a family business.

That all might sound a little like this year’s new streaming movie “A Cherry Pie Christmas” (also known as “A Wisconsin Christmas Pie” on TV’s Great American Family), which was both filmed and set in Door County.

“Christmas on the Alpaca Farm” originally premiered on Lifetime in 2024. Netflix just added it to this year’s holiday lineup on Dec. 15. The city of Green Bay shared the sighting on its Facebook page after a community member spotted it.
