FSU football moving on from Patrick Surtain, defensive back coach

Florida State football has moved on from defensive backs coach Patrick Surtain after three seasons with the Seminoles.

The 11-year NFL vet and budding coach had his hand in defensive backs Renardo Greene, Jarrian Jones and Azareye’h Thomas being drafted during his tenure.

Under Surtain, the Seminoles’ secondary experienced a range of production, with the highs being the performances of Greene, Jones, Thomas and Fentrell Cypress, but inconsistency in the 2024 and 2025 seasons played its part in the 7-17 record over the last two seasons.

The move away from Surtain comes two days after the national early signing day period opened, with 4-star defensive back and top overall recruit Chauncey Kennon signed to the program already.

He was recruited by Surtain.

This is the first of multiple expected moves on the Seminoles staff as head coach Mike Norvell will return to the program in 2026, despite the struggles of the last two years.
