Here's where to find holiday light displays in the Des Moines metro

As winter approaches and the days get shorter in central Iowa, many homes and businesses across the state are decorated with Christmas and other holiday-themed lights to counter the sun setting earlier and create a festive atmosphere.

Here’s a roundup of professional light displays happening in the Des Moines metro, from businesses to charitable organizations.

Ankeny

Uptown Ankeny, 601 S.W. Third St.: Discover 50-plus animated displays sponsored by local businesses in the six blocks surrounding Uptown Ankeny. Don’t miss the 25-foot-tall show tree. Open now through Dec. 31.

Des Moines

Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, 909 Robert D. Ray Drive: Take a stroll through the gardens lit up by thousands of lights. The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden features a gnome hunt, seasonal concessions and more, including a private igloo experience. The event runs until Jan. 4, 2026, from 5 to 9 p.m. Adult tickets are $17, and tickets for those 18 and younger are $11. Children ages one and younger get in free.

Tinseltown, Des Moines Water Works Park, 2251 George Flagg Parkway: This new holiday light show starts on Nov. 22 and will be open seven days a week. Hours run from noon to 9 p.m. Tinseltown offers a range of holiday-themed activities and events, including a lighted stroll or bike ride through the park, Christmas trees for sale, live entertainment and more.

Jolly Holiday Lights, Iowa State Fairgrounds, 3000 E. Grand Ave.: This holiday display at the Iowa State Fairgrounds benefits Make-A-Wish Foundation. Tickets start at $20 per car and $50 for a bus or limo. Open 5:30 to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 5:30 to 10 p.m. on weekends from Friday, Nov. 29, through Saturday, Jan. 4.

Urbandale

Santa’s Rock n’ Lights, Living History Farms, 11121 Hickman Road: Find more than one mile of lights synchronized to music at Santa’s Rock n’ Lights. Des Moines’ light experience offers a large variety of displays, including color-changing light technology, larger-than-life light sculptures, 700 feet of tunnels, and traditional lights. Prices start at $29.99 for a car with six people.

Miracle on 86th Street, Charles Gabus Tree Memorial Park, 3600 86th St.: Find more than 100,000 lights at the Charles Gabus Tree Memorial Park next to the Urbandale Public Library for the Miracle on 86th Street in Urbandale. The event starts Tuesday, Nov. 25 and runs through Jan. 6, 2026.

West Des Moines

Jingle in the Junction, Valley Junction: The shopping district is lit up with 100,000 lights from now through Dec. 18 for the annual “Jingle in the Junction.” Head to Fifth Street and Railroad Avenue to start the ogling.
