Chicago airports rank among those with most delays, report finds. See full list

Airports around the country have been dealing with hundreds of flight cancellations since Friday due to winter storms and the ongoing government shutdown.

Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway are two of 40 airports Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said would see flight reductions.

But how do Illinois’ airports typically compare to others in terms of delays?

Personal finance company SmartAsset analyzed July 2025 data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics and ranked 75 of the nation’s largest airports by the timeliness of their flights. Here’s what the the company found.

O’Hare ranked almost at the bottom of the list, at No. 71 out of 75.

The report found that 58.7% of the airport’s 35,226 arriving flights and 69.2% of the 35,231 departing flights in July were on time.

This resulted in only 64.4% of the airport’s total 70,457 flights being on time.

Midway also landed low on the list, at No. 65 out of 75.

The report found that 61% of the airport’s 2,501 arriving flights and 70% of departing flights were on time in July.

This resulted in 65.5% of Midway’s 5,032 total monthly flights being on time.
