Police officer in Henry County seriously injured when SUV hits police car

NEW CASTLE, IN — A police officer in Henry County was seriously injured on Sunday, Nov. 2, when a SUV crashed into his police car.

According to Indiana State Police, officer Douglas Barker Jr., of the Cadiz Police Department, had stepped out of his vehicle at Indiana 38 and Mechanicsburg Road before a Toyota Rav 4 struck the rear of his police car.

The crash was reported about 6:50 a.m.

Barker was seriously injured, according to an ISP news release, and was flown by medical helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he was listed in stable condition.

The driver of the Honda SUV, 44-year-old Amanda Bailey of New Castle, was taken by ambulance to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Indiana 38 was closed to traffic for about four hours after the crash. An investigation by the ISP crash reconstruction team is continuing.

Henry County sheriff’s deputies, Henry County and Middletown EMS, Cadiz police and Cadiz and Middletown firefighters also responded to the scene.

Cadiz is about seven miles northwest of New Castle.
