Oshkosh man suspected of abusing dog, threatening family to stand trial, held on $10K bond

OSHKOSH – An Oshkosh man accused of beating his dog and threatening family members for sharing video of the incident is now set to stand trial.

Travis Gant, 39, will return to Winnebago County Circuit Court for his arraignment Nov. 17 after being charged with threatening force and intentionally mistreating animals as part of a five-count charge stemming from an Oct. 7 incident on Frederick Street.

Gant had his preliminary hearing Oct. 23, with the court denying his request to reduce the $10,000 cash bond.

He made his initial appearance via video Oct. 14 after being accused of kicking his dog Chanel in the head and threatening a 13-year-old girl and her mother.

What is in the criminal complaint?

According to court documents, officers went to Gant’s home Oct. 7 after receiving complaints of animal abuse from another family, who received a Snapchat of Gant kicking his dog Chanel in the head.

Police spoke to the 13-year-old girl’s mother through a Ring doorbell before Gant eventually connected through the camera system, saying Chanel got in a fight with another of his dogs, Hustle. In the criminal complaint, authorities said they received more videos showing Gant threatening the girl after they turned up to the Frederick Street residence.

Officers said another video shows the girl’s mother also being threatened on the phone by someone suspected to be Gant.

According to court documents, the person is heard saying, “I swear to God I got something for you,” “Imma give you a video to give” and “I’m f—ing you up.”

Authorities said the mother, her children and seven dogs were safely escorted out of the Frederick Street residence.

Police eventually executed a search warrant after texting the girl and escorted the teenager, her mother and seven dogs out of the home with assistance from the Oshkosh Area Humane Society.Authorities said Chanel had an injury to its head, didn’t appear to be coherent, had a hard time standing inside the kennel and was not barking.

Speaking to officers, the girl and her mother said Chanel peed in the kennel and Gant hit her with a stick in the kitchen before he left for work. The girl’s mother said she saw Chanel lying on its side while shaking, with blood on the floor around the dog.

OAHS said the dog sustained injuries that led to its hospitalization.

The Oshkosh Area Humane Society said Chanel was hospitalized at Blue Pearl Animal Hospital as a result of injuries the dog sustained.

The hospital identified signs Chanel was “possibly deaf” with “three fairly large” wounds across the forehead.

Gant was arrested Oct. 9, denying he hit Chanel.

In the criminal complaint, Gant said Hustle attacked Chanel and there were concerns pertaining to her health as she has had seizures in the past.

Assistant District Attorney Amanda Nash is prosecuting the case, with judge Michael Rust presiding.
