Greece Athena’s girls soccer team is now firmly on the map.
The Trojans (9-0-1), unranked to start the season, are listed at No. 4 in the latest rankings from New York State Sportswriters Association.
Among Athena’s best performances to date: a 2-1 win over Pittsford Sutherland (13th in Class A) on Sept. 17, and a 2-2 draw against Spencerport (third in Class AA) on Sept. 22. Also worth mentioning is a season sweep over defending state champion Pittsford Mendon.
The Trojans can trade blows with the best of them. Haley Drake entered this week with 23 goals (third in Section V, only one behind the leaders), while goalkeeper Emilee Montagliano is among the large school leaders in both saves (96) and goals against average (0.93).
With only one match remaining against state-ranked competition, the Trojans are set up for a strong seed and deep run in the Class AA tournament that begins later this month, with hopes of winning their first section title since 2009.
