Expert Predictions for Florida football's Week 6 SEC matchup against Texas Longhorns

The Florida Gators’ first month of the 2025 college football schedule was anything but encouraging for the team and the fans alike, opening up with a 1-3 record that included the program’s first-ever loss to the USF Bulls — in the Swamp, no less.

Billy Napier and Co. got a breather last week with a bye, which hopefully will allow the team to reset and prepare for their next opponent, the Texas Longhorns, who travel to Gainesville this Saturday for an SEC showdown. From here on out, Florida’s schedule is an absolute bruiser, and if the Gators have any hope in making a bowl game, they need to start winning now.

Texas has not exactly set the world on fire either, entering the matchup with a 3-1 record but still ranked seventh in the US LBM Coaches Poll after its own bye last weekend. The lone loss came in the season opener against the Ohio State Buckeyes, while the three wins were against significantly inferior opposition.

So who has the upper hand inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Week 6? The Gators Wire staff offers their expert predictions below.

It is a tough call this week predicting who will emerge victorious

“It is a tough call this week predicting who will emerge victorious in the Swamp on Saturday. Both teams are dealing with unspectacular performances from their starting quarterbacks, and they are also both coming off a bye.

“This leaves plenty of questions swirling around the matchup.

“The Gators do have the home field advantage — which in the past has been quite significant — but the Longhorns have been a much better team as a whole this fall. The early oddsmakers give Texas a touchdown advantage in the spread, which seems pretty fair, but maybe a slight undershoot.

“If Florida’s defense can prove that it is the real deal and the offense can find some sort of rhythm, this could go well for the home team. Unfortunately, I do not see that happening.” — Adam Dubbin

Prediction: Texas 24, Florida 13

Florida’s about to pull the upset on Texas in the Swamp

“I’ve got a gut feeling about this one. Florida’s about to pull the upset on Texas in the Swamp. Both teams come in off a bye, but if last year showed us anything, the Gators always seem to look sharper after a week off. Billy Napier desperately needs that kind of turnaround again, and the timing couldn’t be better.

“As for Arch Manning, the hype hasn’t matched the reality yet. He’s walking into one of the most unforgiving environments in college football, and I just don’t see him thriving under that pressure. Florida’s defense has a chance to rattle him, and with the home crowd roaring, I think they do just enough.” — Aidan Gallardo

Prediction: Florida 24, Texas 21

Unless Florida’s defense forces 3-4 turnovers, this game is all Texas

“Nothing this team has done points to another bye week reset, similar to last year. DJ Lagway has regressed, and it’s unclear how precautionary that boot business was. Arch Manning isn’t all that, true, but neither is Lagway.

“Unless Florida’s defense forces three or four turnovers, this game is all Texas.

“P.S. The only bye week miracle that can happen is Billy Napier coming to his senses and giving up playcalling.” — David Rosenberg

Prediction: Texas 28, Florida 17
