Traffic Talk: Fort Myers Beach gets new signal to help control seasonal crawl of cars

Fort Myers Beach is mostly “quiet” for now, but it won’t be long before the snowbirds and tourists return for some fun in the sun.

As they return they will notice some major changes when it comes to traffic flow coming on to San Carlos Boulevard from the Matanzas Pass Bridge. This includes a new traffic signal at the intersection of Fifth Street and San Carlos Boulevard (S.R. 865).

The traffic signal started working on Sept. 23 in its flashing yellow phase.

According the Florida Department of Transporation (FDOT), the flashing yellow phase serves as a warning to motorists that a new signal is in place and will soon become fully operational.

An additional update will be provided when the signal is scheduled to become fully operational.

FODT advises drivers to exercise caution during this transition period. All scheduling is subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

More about this Fort Myers Beach FDOT project

The purpose of the project is to provide additional travel options on a congested corridor, especially during the peak tourist season (January – April). The project will enhance mobility and safety for vehicular and non-vehicular transportation and increase accessibility and connections between community points of interest.
