What caused the second hazmat fire in weeks at a Yonkers beauty supply warehouse?

Yonkers hazmat crews responded to a three-alarm chemical fire at a beauty warehouse Saturday, just weeks after another fire in the same location.

Yonkers police said a fire developed at European Beauty Concepts on 143 Woodworth Avenue in Yonkers around 3 a.m. Saturday.

What happened at European Beauty Concepts?

Hazmat crews said they determined the fire was a chemical reaction after they observed heavy plumes of black smoke emitting from the building, but no flames. Firefighter and hazmat crews spent over 12 hours battling the flames and cleaning up the scene.

By 5 p.m. Saturday, the fire had been under control, but crews remained on the scene until the hazard was fully cleared.

This time, no residents in the area were evacuated, but air quality was monitored through Sunday evening.

A similar fire occurred just weeks earlier on September 2, after Yonkers fire officials said a forklift may have punctured a container holding chemicals including bleach, which spilled and caused a fire. Officials say they believe that the Sept. 20 fire was caused in a similar way.
