Carson Wentz leaves game: Vikings quarterback replaced by Max Brosmer vs Bengals

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Carson Wentz left his team’s NFL Week 3 game against the Cincinnati Bengals at U.S. Bank Stadium late in the third quarter, with the Vikings leading by 45.

For the Bengals, it was the largest deficit in franchise history.

Wentz, who started in place of the injured JJ McCarthy, was replaced by Max Brosmer.

Wentz completed 14-of-20 attempts for 173 passing yards with two touchdowns before leaving the game.

Former Cincinnati Bearcats star quarterback Desmond Ridder was signed to the Vikings’ 53-man roster after McCarthy’s injury was announced. Ridder, Brosmer’s backup on Minnesota’s depth chart, was inactive Sunday.

Wentz started for the Kansas City Chiefs at the end of the 2024 regular season in a game the Bengals needed the Chiefs to win to keep playoff hopes alive. Kansas City lost 38-0.

Wentz is in his first season with Minnesota. He played in 68 games over five seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, in addition to 17 games with the Indianapolis Colts, eight games with Washington, two games with the Los Angeles Rams and three games with the Chiefs.

Former Bengals quarterback Boomer Esiason predicted the Eagles’ 2021 trade of Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts in part because then-Colts head coach Frank Reich, who was Esiason’s former University of Maryland Terrapins teammate, loved Wentz.
