Keys for the Buccaneers defense against the Jets offense in Week 3

As the Tampa Bay Buccaneers gear up for their 2025 home opener against the New York Jets, the defense has a prime opportunity to set the tone. With New York turning to veteran Tyrod Taylor at quarterback due to Justin Fields’ concussion, the Bucs should look to force pressure, confusion, and mistakes from the jump.

Here are four defensive keys that could help Tampa Bay seal a Week 3 victory:

Make Tyrod Taylor Uncomfortable Early

Taylor is a savvy veteran, but he’s stepping into a tough environment on short notice. The Bucs’ pass rush, led by Yaya Diaby and Haason Reddick, must create early disruption. Collapsing the pocket and forcing Taylor to throw on the run will limit his rhythm and decision-making.

Shut Down the Run Game

The Jets will likely lean heavily on Breece Hall and the ground game to ease pressure on Taylor. Tampa Bay’s interior defense, anchored by Vita Vea, must clog lanes and force New York into 3rd-and-long situations where they’re less dangerous.

Tackle Clean, Limit YAC

Garrett Wilson is electric with the ball in his hands, and the Jets love short throws that turn into big plays. Solid tackling from the secondary and linebackers is a must. Keep everything in front and make them earn every yard. Linebackers must be better in coverage, as they were gashed by running backs catching passes out of the backfield against the Texans.

Create Takeaways

Whether it’s a tipped pass, forced fumble, or disguised coverage, the Bucs have to take advantage of Taylor’s limited reps with the first-team offense. A couple of timely turnovers could break this one wide open. Control the line, limit explosive plays, and turn pressure into points. If the defense shows up, the Bucs could dominate their home opener.
