Three New York suburbs have been named some of the safest in the country, according to a recently released study. Massapequa, Seneca Falls and Niagara Falls were included in SmartAsset’s America’s Safest Suburbs list for 2025. The study assessed 360 U.S. towns with at least 5,000 residents and within 45 minutes driving distance of a major city based on several metrics like violent crime rates, traffic deaths and excessive drinking.
“While costs are often a major factor for families deciding where to settle, safety is another important factor for quality of life,” the study said. “Many households are willing to pay a premium to be in a neighborhood they feel physically safe in…”

Which New York suburbs are the safest?
The town of Massapequa on Long Island was ranked No. 25 on SmartAsset’s list with 6.11 traffic deaths per 100,000 people, a violent crime rate of 0.0017 and a property crime rate of 0.0103. Just over 21% of adults report excessive drinking in the Nassau County suburb.
Located around 50 miles southeast of Rochester, No. 119-ranked Seneca Falls has a violent crime rate of 0.0019, a property crime rate of 0.0194 and 8.68 traffic deaths per 100,000 people. Over 22.6% of adults in the Seneca County town report excessive drinking.
Niagara Falls, home to its namesake waterfall and about 20 miles north of the city of Buffalo, narrowly made it onto SmartAsset’s list with a No. 350 ranking. The Niagara County city has a property crime rate of 0.0550, a violent crime rate of 0.0331, 9.91 traffic deaths per 100,000 people and 22.96% of adults report excessive drinking.
