WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. – When Hunter Greene struck out the second and third batters he faced Sept. 13, the Cincinnati Reds’ powerful starter joined elite company in MLB history.
The second of those two – a swinging strikeout of Athletics rookie Nick Kurtz – was the 600th of Greene’s career.
He reached that mark in fewer games (89) than anybody else in Reds history (Luis Castillo, 96, from 2017-21).
And only five MLB pitchers in history have done it in fewer than the 479 1/3 it took Greene (year reached 600 in parentheses):
