Woman killed in fiery crash in Penfield identified

Monroe County sheriff’s deputies identified the woman killed in a fiery crash on Atlantic Avenue in Penfield on WEdnesday, Sept. 10.

Sharon Shearer, 69, of Penfield died when the vehicle she was driving crashed on Atlantic Avenue, just east of Five Mile Line Road near a curve in the road, just before 3:10 p.m., said Deputy David Marcucci of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Shearer was alone in her car.

It appeared that Shearer was driving east on Atlantic Avenue when the car “suddenly veered off the south side of the road at a curve” and struck a support wire to a utility pole before striking a large boulder and catching fire, Marcucci said. Emergency responders arrived on Atlantic to find the car engulfed in flames and entangled in downed power lines, which hindered rescue efforts, Marcucci said.

Deputies continue to investigate to determine what caused the single-car crash.

“Our thoughts to the family of the deceased during this tragic time,” Marcucci said in a news release.
