Kamari Moulton injury update: Kirk Ferentz provides latest on Iowa football running back

IOWA CITY — Kamari Moulton, Reece Vander Zee and Bryce Goerge are not expected to be available for Iowa football’s rivalry matchup with Iowa State on Sept. 6, head coach Kirk Ferentz said during his Sept. 2 weekly press conference.

Vander Zee felt discomfort in his foot leading up to Week 1 and will miss multiple games to open the 2025 season. George suffered an injury during pregame warmups before UAlbany on Aug. 30.

Of the three, Moulton was the only one to actually play against the Great Danes.

Moulton started Iowa’s 2025 season-opener against UAlbany, but his outing did not last long. The redshirt sophomore rushed three times for 22 yards before exiting with an injury in the first quarter. He was declared out for the remainder of the game before halftime.

The timetable for when Moulton could return is unclear.

“Probably a couple of weeks, I’m guessing, but I don’t want to pin it down because I really don’t know,” Ferentz said. “But definitely not this week. And he’s doing fine, but it’s just going to take some time.”

The loss of Moulton hurts the Hawkeyes. He was Iowa’s second-leading rusher last season behind Kaleb Johnson. Moulton rushed for more than 100 yards in a win over Maryland last season and nearly reached that milestone again in the Music City Bowl against Missouri.

But even without Moulton, Iowa’s running game excelled against UAlbany. Redshirt freshman Xavier Williams burst onto the scene with a performance of 122 rushing yards. Terrell Washington Jr. added 69 yards on the ground. While quarterback Mark Gronowski did not have a good day passing the ball, he showed his effectiveness with his legs, rushing for 39 yards and one touchdown.

The Hawkeyes ran for more than 300 yards against UAlbany behind dominant offensive line play.

Iowa could use another strong performance on the ground against Iowa State on Sept. 6 in Ames. But the Hawkeyes will have to do so without Moulton.
