Iowa football rules out players vs. ISU in latest injury update

Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz met with the media on Tuesday in preparation of the Hawkeyes’ Week 2 date at No. 18 Iowa State.

Ferentz ruled out several key players with injuries. Sophomore running back Kamari Moulton, sophomore wide receiver Reece Vander Zee and graduate offensive lineman Bryce George were ruled out by Ferentz.

“Medically, kind of where we stood Saturday night. (Kamari) Moulton will not be able to play. Don’t see him playing. (Reece) Vander Zee will be out. And Bryce George who got injured in pregame, he’ll be out, too. So, I don’t see those guys having any chance to play,” Ferentz said on Tuesday.

None of the three are a major surprise: All were absent from the Hawkeyes’ Week 2 depth chart. But, it confirms what was expected.

Moulton suffered a shoulder injury and exited after just six snaps against Albany.

“Kamari has a shoulder injury. I don’t know to what extent. Hopefully, he’ll get back here shortly,” Ferentz told Iowa play-by-play voice Gary Dolphin on Saturday after the Hawkeyes topped Albany, 34-7.

Meanwhile, George suffered a peculiar elbow injury during pregame warmups.

“Pregame. That’s a new one. I’m pretty sure it’s a first for me. As a line coach or just any coach, but yeah, it was a freak thing. He was obviously devastated. It hits hard. I think he’ll be back. I don’t know how soon, but anyway, he was just not counting on that,” Ferentz said.

Fans knew that Vander Zee was dealing with a foot injury heading into the season opener.

Ferentz commented on Vander Zee’s injury after the win over the Great Danes.

“Full detail is he was in the food line after practice and felt discomfort in his foot. I don’t know how long he’ll be out, but nobody saw it coming, including him.

“I imagine a couple weeks here. We’ll see. But again, anytime a player gets hurt (it’s tough). Kamari seemed to be doing pretty good today, but Bryce, really, it’s his last year, and Reece was really disappointed, too, because he’s had a great camp and done a lot of good things. But he’ll be back. He’ll get back,” Ferentz said on Saturday.

Iowa kicks off against Iowa State at 11 a.m. CT on Fox.
