The Indianapolis Colts claimed former Jacksonville Jaguars’ linebacker Chad Muma on waivers.
Muma was drafted by Jacksonville in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft. Over those three seasons, Muma played 692 defensive snaps over 50 games, which included seven starts.
Muma’s biggest impact, however, has come on special teams, where he’s played 837 snaps in his career and has done so across five of the six different phases.
In what became a crowded linebacker room in Jacksonville following a few offseason additions, Muma was left on the outside looking in. Rookie Jack Kiser took control of one of the backup linebacker roles, and he’s also able to contribute on special teams.
The addition of Muma gives the Colts some needed depth at the linebacker position and someone with defensive experience.
Presumably starting next to Zaire Franklin, Week 1 will be Joe Bachie, but behind those two, before Muma was added, were Cameron McGrone and Segun Olubi.
Olubi has 136 career defensive snaps under his belt coming into this season, while McGrone has only nine.
From the jump, Muma may be the next man up at the linebacker position behind Franklin and Bachie.
To make room for Muma on the Colts’ at-capacity-roster, there will have to be a corresponding roster move.
