Six minors charged after spate of car break-ins Downtown this weekend, police say

Cincinnati police arrested six minors as young as 12 after a spate of car break-ins Downtown this weekend.

The department’s new street crime task force and its Civil Disturbance Response Team charged minors between the ages of 12 and 17 with theft from auto, criminal damaging and violation of city curfew, according to a social media post from the department.

Officers responded to reports of vehicle break-ins the weekend of Aug. 22 in the 300 block of McFarland Street and the 700 block of Sycamore Street, the post says.

Six minors were taken into custody in connection with the break-ins.

“We want to thank the community for staying alert and working with our officers to help keep our neighborhoods safe,” the department said in the post.

Cincinnati police have put additional resources toward curbing crime after an uptick this year, particularly in the urban core of Downtown and Over-the-Rhine.

City officials have said they are resuming enforcement of a stricter youth curfew, with tighter rules in the urban core. Citywide after 11 p.m., anyone unaccompanied under the age of 18 is in violation of curfew. South of Liberty Street in Downtown and Over-the-Rhine after 9 p.m., anyone unaccompanied under 18 is in violation.

However, during the first weekend of the new curfew rules, no one was cited for breaking curfew or taken to a curfew center, police reported.

A department spokesman did not answer whether any other youth besides those involved in the car break-ins were cited for breaking curfew or taken to a curfew center this weekend.
