Labor Day is observed each year the first Monday of September. This year, it falls on Sept. 1, which is quickly approaching. Here’s what to know.
Is Sept. 1 a federal holiday?
Sept. 1 is one of the 11 federal holidays in 2025. The next federal holiday won’t come until Monday, Oct. 13, which is Columbus Day.
Are banks open on Sept. 1?
Banks generally closed on the same days as the Federal Reserve, which follows the federal holiday schedule above in 2025, according to Business Insider. Online bank transactions also aren’t typically processed on federal holidays.
Is mail delivered on Sept. 1? Are the Post Office, other shipping companies open?
The United States Post Office is also closed on all federal holidays in 2025, including Sept. 1, and does not deliver regular mail on those days.
The Post Office does still deliver items sent through Priority Mail Express on federal holidays, however. And customers can still “order stamps, print shipping labels, order boxes and other mail supplies, and request package pickups” on USPS.com during federal holidays, according to AARP.

UPS will not have regular pickup or deliveries on Sept. 1, as it is one of the company holidays, but UPS Express Critical service is available. UPS store locations may be closed. Check your local location for specific hours.
FedEx, FedEx Freight, and FedEx Logistics are all closed on Labor Day. FedEx Custom Critical deliveries will be made and FedEx office (retail locations) will have modified hours.
Most other government offices, including municipal offices as well as libraries, will be closed on Sept. 1.
Is Playland open for Labor Day, Sept. 1?
Playland Park will be open from noon to 9 p.m. on Labor Day, according to its website.
Costco is closed on Labor Day
Most stores and restaurants are typically open on Labor Day. The most reliable way to confirm a restaurant’s hours is to call them directly.
The big exception to stores and restaurants open on Sept. 1 is Costco, which will be closed that day.
