Dark, stormy clouds drifted into the Coachella Valley on Sunday, Aug. 24, bringing some more thunder and rain to the Palm Springs area to close out a wetter-than-usual weekend.
Monsoon thunderstorms in the mountains adjacent to the Coachella Valley are the cause of the precipitation, Philip Gonsalves, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in San Diego, said. Half an inch of rain was measured on the slope of Mount San Jacinto on Sunday, and a few minutes of rainfall was seen in Palm Springs.
Palm Springs weather: Is more rain in the forecast?
More rain activity could be on the way in the desert this week.
The National Weather Services reports a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 25, though mostly sunny skies are expected with a high near 103 degrees. Showers and thunderstorms are also likely on Tuesday, Aug. 26, and slightly on Wednesday, Aug. 27.
Brief periods of strong, gusty winds could also be expected with the rain, Gonsalves said. He added that these storms can also produce pea-sized hail.
