An Alfred man was charged with second-degree murder after an alleged altercation left another man dead at the Economy Inn at 836 state Route 244 in Alfred Station.
Amity-based State Police arrested 27-year-old Briar A. York Aug. 21 following an investigation by the Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
Police responded to the Economy Inn around 10:22 a.m. Thursday for a welfare check on Sean M. Dawson, 32, of Alfred. Officers found Dawson in his hotel room, dead from multiple apparent stab wounds.
The investigation determined that Dawson was visited by York in his hotel room on Aug. 19, police said. York became physically aggressive and stabbed Dawson multiple times following a discussion regarding Dawson’s status on the sex offender registry, according to police.
York then attempted to clean the scene of possible evidence after the stabbing, police said. He was also charged with tampering with physical evidence, another felony.
York was located, arrested and transported to the Amity barracks for processing Thursday. He was later transported to the Allegany County Jail for arraignment. York is being held in the Allegany County jail with no bail. He is scheduled to appear in Alfred Town Court on Sept. 8.
State Police uniformed personnel and investigators were at the scene through the afternoon, with a heavy police patrol presence in the Economy Inn parking lot and several unmarked vehicles parked along Route 244. State police cruisers remained on scene well into the evening.
Assisting in the investigation were the NYSP Forensic Identification Unit, Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Allegany County Sheriff’s Department, Village of Alfred Police, Pennsylvania State Police, and the Allegany County Coroner.
The investigation is ongoing.
