Members of the Gainesville High School class of 1975 — bonded by memories, shared laughter and the unshakeable spirit of the Purple Hurricanes — gathered recently to celebrate their 50th reunion.
Held Aug. 8-10, the reunion weekend kicked off with a meet-and-greet at the Daft Cow Brewery at Tech City in Alachua. The event included music, hors d’oeuvres and a signature “Purple Haze” mocktail created especially for the occasion. Many smiles entered the hall as some were seeing classmates they had not seen in decades.
On Aug. 9, current Gainesville High Assistant Principal Fred Ashford gave a tour of the GHS campus. Returning alumni enjoyed seeing the marquee welcoming the class of 1975 back to the school.
“We both had the time of our lives, to connect with classmates that we had not seen in years was a blessing,” said 1975 graduate George Keckley. “(My wife) Annette and I have something that we will treasure for the rest of our lives. We are looking forward to reuniting again in the future.”
At the Cade Museum that evening, a sold-out crowd attended a Golden Gala with a Sneaker Ball flair. The alumni honored their principal and guest of honor, Dan Boyd. Former teacher Lynn Sandefur also attended. The class of 1975 feasted on hors d’oeuvres, a catered dinner and a featured dessert, and enjoyed 1970s-era music.
“I will always cherish the memories of the whirlwind of such an amazing return to Gainesville. I fully appreciate all of the effort everyone involved put into organizing this, your spouses, volunteers, vendors, special guests, etc. It was flawless!” alumnus Dan Taylor said.
On Aug. 10, a farewell breakfast was held at Another Broken Egg Café as the 1975 graduates gathered one more time to say goodbye. Many were already making plans for future events.
