Khalil Mack heaps praise on ascending Chargers player

Edge rusher Caleb Murphy has been one of the most impressive Chargers players this summer. On Wednesday, veteran Khalil Mack spoke highly of Murphy’s play during the preseason.

“Impressive, impressive man,” Mack said of Murphy. “That dude, he’s showing up in a major way. I’m proud of him. Just wanna see more of it. Just being on top of him, staying consistent. Stay consistent, not get too high, not get too low. Keep his foot on the gas pedal. And keep dominating.”

Murphy is removed from a two-sack performance against the Saints, one of which was a strip sack. Along with making the most of his opportunities on defense, he has also been a contributor on special teams, working the core-four units.

Murphy’s strong showings have not only put him in the conversation for a spot on the 53-man roster but have him in consideration for the fourth edge rusher position on the depth chart, which was thought to be held by fourth-round pick Kyle Kennard.

Murphy, the former undrafted free agent out of Ferris State, signed to the Chargers’ practice squad last October after he was waived by the Titans. He was active for three games and logged 12 defensive snaps and 37 special teams snaps.
