Trump’s firing of McEntarfer a major mistake

In an apparent continuation of his role on “The Apprentice,” President Donald Trump has fired Erika McEntarfer, the Bureau of Labor Statistics commissioner. Trump claimed, without proof, that Ms. McEntarfer had manipulated job numbers to make unemployment look higher than it actually was, all in an effort to hurt him politically.

Before gleefully announcing his favorite TV punchline, “You’re fired,” perhaps he should have done the arithmetic as his Uncle John, the often-cited brilliant MIT professor, undoubtedly would have done.

Simple math shows that by putting the now ex-commissioner out of a job, Mr. Trump has just added one more unemployed person to the next job report.

What is the Columbus Zoo hiding?

I totally agree with the recent articles regarding the Columbus Zoo’s refusal to be accountable to the public, i.e., we, the taxpayers. There is no logical reason for its refusal unless there are facts there that the zoo’s leadership are embarrassed about.

We are paying taxes to support this phenomenal attraction. But its leadership being so secretive makes me think there is more dirt there. Open the books! If not, don’t count on my “yes” vote down the road.

What are you afraid of?

Another travesty

“Trump ballroom a lasting legacy” says the Dispatch headline on Susan Page’s USA TODAY article.

Surely someone made a mistake, or AI intervened. Surely “lasting travesty” must have been the intended and correct phrase.

A 90,000 square-foot Big, Beautiful, Trump Ballroom attached to our 55,000 square-foot White House?

Only Trump could envision such monstrous $200 million tacky excess. Don’t worry, Trump says he’s paying for it, (like Mexico paid for his big, beautiful wall).

Oh well, fit for a king. Just imagine all surfaces that will require acres of gold leaf stuck on plastic filigrees from Home Depot, giant crystal chandeliers as far as the eye can see, space to entertain 650 of the richest of the rich, and those scheming to be. And so much more useful than health care, or rural hospitals or nursing homes, or food stamps, or…

A lasting travesty indeed.

The perils of socialism

What happens to New York City under socialist mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani’s policies will be a decisive test for all Americans to witness and evaluate.

If it’s the usual hardships a socialist leader has to offer their subjects, then that’s what’s needed to expose the perils of socialism.

Hopefully, those hardships will give unwary voters the perception not to vote for politicians with the likes of Mamdani, and not for the politicians that gave Mamdani their support.

Correction

The final paragraph and signature of a letter in Thursday’s edition was omitted. They should have read as follows:

These public servants should insist that CEO Tom Schmid and the rest of the zoo board stop hiding information from the public. Franklin County voters should reject any new property tax levy requested by the zoo until its officials reverse their outrageous policies.
