This Week In History: Northland Mall, located at Morse and Karl roads, opened on Aug. 13, 1964. Northland was the first of the city’s compass-point shopping malls (Northland, Eastland, Westland), and more than 50,000 people visited on opening day. Originally an open-air shopping center, it was enclosed in 1975 and more stores were added. Eventually, other Columbus-area malls opened (Tuttle, in 1997; Easton, 1999; Polaris, 2001) and began to lure shoppers away. Northland closed in 2002, with some portions demolished, and others redeveloped.
