Lindy's Sports names FSU football's top newcomer

The Florida State Seminoles brought in over 40 new players this offseason as Mike Norvell overhauled his roster after their dreadful 2-10 performance a year ago. They addressed nearly every position on the roster ahead of a critical position, filling out depth and adding starters.

One of their most important additions was defensive lineman James Williams, who followed Tony White and Terrance Knighton from Nebraska. The Seminoles did not pressure the quarterback nearly enough last year, and Williams is looking to change that. Lindy’s Sports named him FSU’s top newcomer due to that ability and his familiarity with the system.

“A pure pass rusher at Nebraska, Williams had seven sacks in 16 games. Williams added 20 pounds and now checks in at 262 pounds as he seeks to defend the run as well as he rushes the passer off the edge. Williams also has extensive experience in the new 3-3-5 defense, which often also features a four-man front, and has mentored younger Seminoles.”

Williams broke out in 2024 as one of Nebraska’s top pass rushers and appeared in all 12 games. He registered 14 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 5.0 sacks. He finished second in sacks and fourth in tackles for loss. He recorded 28 pressures in just 143 snaps.

He has proven he can get to the quarterback. The new step for Williams is becoming an effective defender against the run and staying on the field more.
