Mills ends council tenure as Cheboygan seeks interested applicants for open seat

CHEBOYGAN — The city is accepting applications from residents interested in temporarily filling the council seat of Diane Mills.

Mills, who also served as mayor pro tem, resigned from council because she will be moving out of the city. Her resignation became official at the conclusion of the Tuesday, July 22 meeting. Mayor Brett Mallory said the city will now accept applications for the position.

Those interested should submit a letter of intent to city clerk Alyssa Singles. Voters will select permanent replacements for Mills and Sierra Oliver, who resigned earlier this year, in a November special election. Adam Bedwin was appointed to temporarily fill Oliver’s seat.

Mills was appointed to council in 2021 to fill a vacant seat for a term ending in 2022. She won a special election in November 2021 to fill the remainder of that term. In November 2022, she ran again and won a second term that would have ended in 2026.

Those interested in running for a council seat in November can find more information at cheboygan.org.
