Hot days ahead in Indiana. How high will temperatures go? What's a heat dome?

The Indianapolis area is in for heat for the rest of the week, according to the National Weather Service.

Wednesday will bring sunny skies with a high near 90. The high will be about 92 on Thursday when there is a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8 p.m. and then a chance of showers and thunderstorms overnight.

Showers are likely with a thunderstorm possible after 2 p.m. Friday, with a high near 89. The high on Saturday will be near 86, with showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Highs will increase to near 89 on Sunday and near 90 on Monday.

The conditions could make for what is called a heat dome.

Here’s what to know.

What is a heat dome?

A heat dome is a high-pressure system, which is an expansive bulge of warm air that can stretch for 1,000 miles during the spring and summer months and provide sinking air over much of the country, according to The Weather Channel.

The sinking air is what can make them so dangerous, as often days-long heat waves are the result.

A heat dome dries out the ground and air above it, which deters thunderstorms, but means drought can begin or worsen.

A heat dome is also known as a ridge of pressure, blocking high and death ridge.
