Bills unveil throwback helmet to be worn in Highmark Stadium's season finale

The Buffalo Bills will be tipping their caps – literally – to their Super Bowl era teams by wearing the same red helmets they wore at that time for the Week 18 season finale against the New York Jets.

That, of course, will be the last regular-season game at Highmark Stadium. The Bills wore the red helmet from 1987 through 2001, a period when the team won six AFC East division titles, four AFC championships, and made the postseason 10 times.

In a statement to the Bills website, Bills Chief Operating Officer and Rochester native Pete Guelli said, “There’s no better way to celebrate our fans and honor our team’s history by bringing back the red helmets. The Bills provided this region with some of the most incredible moments in franchise history in the 1990s wearing these helmets and we feel this is a great way to commemorate the closing of Highmark Stadium in our regular season finale.”

Another vintage uniform look for Buffalo Bills also to be worn this season

As a way to honor the teams from the early days of the franchise, the Bills will also wear the standing Buffalo helmet twice with throwback uniforms twice- on the road at Atlanta in Week 5, and then at home against Tampa Bay in Week 11.

The Bills wore the standing Buffalo from 1962 through 1973 which was the first season at Rich Stadium. They switched to a charging Buffalo design for the 1974 season.
