Mathias was eastbound on the highway when a man in an eastbound Mazda pickup struck the back of his pickup, troopers said. The impact forced Mathias’ truck off the side of the road before it struck a traffic sign and overturned.

Paramedics pronounced Mathias dead at the scene.

The driver of the Mazda was transported to Fairfield Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

The highway patrol did not say whether the other driver faced any charges or citations. The crash is under investigation.
