Body of 14-year-old boy recovered from Lake Kesslerwood East, official confirms

Indiana officials have recovered the body of the 14-year-old boy who went missing after swimming in a lake in northeast Indianapolis around 6 p.m. on July 6.

The body was recovered around 10:30 a.m. on July 7 from Lake Kesslerwood East, according to Dave Moss, a spokesperson with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

The teen was on a boat with friends when he went missing in the water, officials said. The water was about 30 feet deep with zero visibility.

Moss said he was told by witnesses that the boy seemed to go limp while he was in the water. A friend of the boy tried to keep him afloat, Moss said.

His disappearance began a search that involved more than 60 officials and at least four public safety agencies that worked late into the night, Moss said.

The search began in earnest just before 7 p.m. but was halted several times as passing storms made conditions unsafe.

Officials seemed to search the wrong area initially, Moss said. By the time they were able to better adjust their search, he said, it was too dark to continue. Their search resumed this morning when the body was located.
