Teen killed in July 4 mass shooting at house party identified by Columbus police

Columbus police have identified the juvenile killed in a July 4 shooting at a party at a short-term rental house on the city’s East Side.

Cameron Moore, 17, was among six people shot around 2:40 a.m. on Independence Day at a party at a home in the 800 block of Wilson Avenue, just south of East Livingston Avenue in the Southern Orchards neighborhood, police said.

Moore was transported by medics in critical condition to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, Downtown, where he later died at 3:09 a.m. He was one of three people found at the scene with gunshot wounds who were transported by medics. Three others arrived at hospitals by private transportation. None of the other victims sustained life-threatening injuries, police said.

Police said that Moore was one of two juveniles and four adults who were shot in the mass shooting.

Police are still investigating the shooting and have released no further details about any suspect or why a party reported to have involved a couple of hundred people was allowed to continue after officers stopped outside the home shortly before 2 a.m. July 4 — more than a half-hour before the shooting began.

Earl Jones, a security guard hired for the party at the VRBO-listed rental house, told WBNS 10-TV that everyone entering was screened for weapons until the host allowed a group of people to enter without screening them. Prior to that, Jones told 10-TV, weapons had been found on several people attempting to enter.

Columbus police took to the social media platform X after the mass shooting to ask the community — particularly parents and guardians — to keep track of their children and what they are doing to help prevent this kind of tragedy.

Mayor Andrew Ginther, Council President Shannon Hardin and others also issued statements condemning the violence.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Columbus Police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730 or provide anonymous tips through Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS (8477).
