S Cam Bynum first player in Indianapolis Colts history to do this

Indianapolis Colts’ safety Cam Bynum will be the first player in franchise history to wear the No. 0.

The Colts signed Bynum to a four-year, $60 million deal in free agency this offseason. Originally, he was going to wear No. 27, but then he made the change to No. 0 not long after.

“It’s an honor,” Bynum said of wearing No. 0. “Just being the first to do anything in a franchise and for me to be a new guy also, I gotta make them be grateful that they gave it to someone like me that’ll come in here and be a leader, be a worker.

“I think that it’s super cool, me being able to get a single digit, because the only person in history was Stephon Gilmore for a defensive player to wear a single digit. Now that they gave this to me, I feel like I have to go earn the right to wear this number every single day. But it’s an honor because it’s swaggy.”

Bynum joins the Colts after playing his first four NFL seasons in Minnesota. There, he proved to be a versatile presence in the secondary, handling a variety of roles, while also making a lot of plays on the football. Over the last three seasons, Bynum has recorded seven interceptions and 13 pass breakups.

In Lou Anarumo’s defense, where we will see a heavier dose of disguised coverages, Bynum’s versatility from the safety position will be key in unlocking the full potential of the secondary.

“Another guy that’s got a bunch of different skill sets that can help us,” Anarumo said of Bynum. “He started out as a corner, so he’s got some coverage ability. He’s always been able to take the ball away. He’s been a consistent tackler. He’s super smart. He’s played in a few systems, so he has a good feel for a little bit of everything, just in terms of not one particular defense.”
