The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup rolls on today with two games in the Round of 16, including one of the biggest matchups of the tournament: Lionel Messi and Inter Miami vs. European champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Messi played for PSG from 2021 to 2023 after spending 17 illustrious seasons at FC Barcelona, scoring 22 goals with 30 assists over 58 matches with the French power. He came to Florida after that, winning MLS MVP in 2024 and immediately vaulting Inter Miami to the top of the league with help from fellow Barcelona expats Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. The club has one win and two draws this tournament, giving up a two-goal lead with 10 minutes to go in its most recent game vs. group winner Palmeiras.
But PSG is even more loaded, fresh off its first UEFA Champions League title thanks to a dynamic attack led by Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele, though the latter hasn’t played in the Club World Cup as he nurses a quad injury. The French side scored six goals in its two wins but looked listless in a 1-0 loss to Botafogo.
That’s not the only game on the schedule today, with Bayern Munich taking on Flamengo in South Florida. Harry Kane and the German powerhouse opened the Club World Cup with a 10-goal outburst but lost their group-stage finale to Benfica. Meanwhile, Flamengo won their group with two wins and a draw as all four Brazilian teams in the tournament advanced to the knockout stage.
