Using the 247Sports composite rankings from 2000 onward, The Athletic’s Grace Raynor ranked the top 25 No. 1-ranked recruits of the 2000s, and the highest-ranked signee in Florida history checks in near the bottom of the list.
Defensive end Ronald Powell Jr. (2010) was the crown jewel of Urban Meyer’s final recruiting class with the Gators and the only No. 1 recruit Florida has ever signed, but he checks in at No. 22 of 25 players on this list.
“Powell is still the highest-rated Florida recruit of the modern era and likely would have had a better career had injuries not taken their toll,” Raynor wrote. “The California native started 21 games from 2010-13 but tore his ACL in April 2012, then reinjured his knee and missed the season. He returned in 2013 and finished his career with 79 tackles, 19 TFLs and 11 sacks before becoming a fifth-round NFL Draft pick. Powell died of an unknown cause in December 2024.”
Powell could finish even lower on this list when everything is said and done. Texas quarterback Arch Manning is ranked just below Powell and is only now stepping into a starting role. Missouri/Oklahoma wide receiver Dorail Green-Beckham (2012) and Georgia defensive tackle Trenton Thompson (2015) are the two ranked below Manning and Powell.
There’s always going to be the what-if questions when talking about Powell’s career. The injuries are too significant to ignore, and the No. 1 ranking puts him under a microscope. Being ranked at all on this list means you were the best of the best at one point, even if things didn’t go as planned from there. Plus, take a look at the competition. These top-ranked recruits end up being generational players half the time.
