Potterville's Fox Memorial Park has a beach, swimming, fishing and an observatory

A Walk in the Park is an ongoing series from State Journal photographer Nick King, who intends to explore Lansing area parks one hour at a time. If you have a suggestion of a park he should visit, email him at nking@lsj.com.

If you’re looking for a way to beat the summer heat, Eaton County’s Fox Memorial Park is a great spot for swimming, fishing and exploring nature.

The park, located at 3981 E. Gresham Highway in Potterville, features a smaller kidney shaped lake with a sandy beach leading into a designated swimming area. The lake depth at the swimming beach is shallow and gradually reaches a depth of about five feet near the middle of the swimming spot.

In addition to swimming, the lake is a nice fishing spot with accessible areas around the water to drop a line. There is also a fishing dock for anglers to use or if you want to look out over the park’s 100 acres.

Fox Memorial is also a great place to take in nature along various natural and bike trails along and though wooded and open areas. There are several benches, picnic tables and two playgrounds inside the park as well.

Fox Memorial Park features an open-air observatory for stargazing. There’s a public viewing schedule.

There’s a nice-sized parking lot, permanent bathrooms and water fountains on site. Guests can rent one of the two pavilions available in the park. No pets are allowed.

Fox Memorial Park opened in 1980 and sits on land donated in 1976 by Luella Fox as a memorial to her husband, Paul Fox, who was a lifelong Potterville-area resident, farmer and owner and operator of the Fox Standard Oil Station and grocery store in Windsor Township. It was the first public swimming facility in Eaton County.
