How do you replace one of the three best catchers in college baseball? If you’re Texas baseball, the answer is by recruiting another top-three catcher out of the transfer portal.
On Monday, ex-Notre Dame catcher Carson Tinney announced that he will transfer to Texas. Tinney spent the past two seasons with the Fighting Irish.
During the 2025 season, Tinney hit .348 with 17 home runs, 53 RBIs and a .753 slugging percentage.
Tinney has been named a finalist for the Buster Posey Award, which will be handed out to college baseball’s top catcher Thursday. The other finalists for that award? Texas junior Rylan Galvan and Coastal Carolina’s Caden Bodine.
At Texas, Tinney will likely replace Galvan behind the plate. Galvan is currently rated as a top-200 prospect for next month’s MLB Draft by mlb.com.
This past season, Galvan led Texas in home runs (15), walks (47) and slugging percentage (.613).
Tinney joins an impressive transfer class that includes Seton Hall outfielder Aiden Robbins, Wichita State infielder Josh Livingston and Stanford shortstop Temo Becerra. In total, eight players have announced this offseason that they will transfer to Texas.
Texas is coming off a debut season with head coach Jim Schlossnagle which went 44-14 and won the Southeastern Conference’s championship. The Longhorns were upset by UTSA in the NCAA Tournament’s Austin Regional.
