A “suspicious item” found in the parking lot of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Region VIII Training Academy turned out to be a fake grenade, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said.
The item was found Sunday afternoon, June 22, prompting the precautionary closure of streets leading to the sheriff’s complex containing the training academy, the East Montana Patrol Station and the El Paso County Jail Annex at 12501 Montana Ave. in the far East Side, sheriff’s spokeswoman Priscilla I. Contreras stated in an email.
The El Paso Police Department Bomb Squad was called to assist and determined that the grenade-looking item was fake and safe, Contreras said. The area was cleared by Sunday evening.
It was not disclosed how the item ended up in the parking lot.
