City of Canton and partners to open 2 cooling centers amid extreme NE Ohio heat

CANTON − Refuge of Hope and Canton’s Garaux Park shelter will serve as cooling centers for people who need to escape the high temperatures that are forecasted for this week.

Guests going to the Refuge of Hope at 715 Second St. NE must enter through Door 4.

Water and food will be available. The agency will be open as a cooling center from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on June 21; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on June 22; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on June 23; and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on June 24.

The Garaux Park shelter at 3801 13th St. SW will be open as a cooling center from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 23 and June 24.

Guests must enter through the main entrance. Water will be available.

The Stark Area Regional Transit Authority will provide free transportation to the cooling centers.

Riders may board any regular SARTA route to the Cornerstone Transit Center on Cherry Avenue SE and inform the driver they are headed to a cooling center. No fare will be charged. Those traveling to the Garaux Shelter will take Route 113.

If transportation is needed outside of SARTA’s service hours, residents may call Canton City dispatch at 330-649-5800 for assistance.

The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat watch for the Stark County area that starts at noon on June 22 and lasts through 8 p.m. on June 24.
