In 2024, Texas had more active shooter incidents than any other state, FBI report reveals

Last year, there were more active shooter incidents in Texas than in any other state, according to a recently released annual report from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The report records 24 active shooter incidents in 2024, which is half the number reported in 2023 (48). There were a total of 106 casualties, a 57% decrease from 2023 (244).

The 24 incidents spanned 19 states, with the most occurring in Texas. The month of June saw the most, with five, followed by September with four. While active shooter incidents happened every day of the week, Monday had the most with seven. They were more likely to occur in the morning.

Where do most active shooter incidents happen?

Active shooter incidents happened in five location categories, as analyzed by the FBI:

The deadliest active shooter incident resulted in 14 casualties, four killed and 10 wounded. While two incidents had no casualties, three met the federal definition of a mass killing incident. Six involved exchanges of gunfire between the shooters and law enforcement. One officer was killed, and five more were wounded.

A total of 29 firearms were used in 2024 incidents: 17 handguns (59%), nine rifles (31%) and three shotguns (10%). One incident involved an improvised explosive device (IED). Law enforcement captured 14 of the shooters. Five were killed by law enforcement, and six died by suicide.

Majority of active shooters were men

Just one of last year’s active shooter incidents involved two shooters. Out of all 25 shooters, 22 were men and three were women. In five incidents, police drew connections between the shooters and either the location or at least one victim — establishing what the FBI defines as “insider threat.”
