A Door County sheriff’s deputy saved a surprising life following an otherwise common accident.
Deputy Siera Becker responded to a call for what first seemed a routine car-vs.-deer accident at 6:21 a.m. June 2 on Park Drive in the town of Nasewaupee, just northwest of Potawatomi State Park. Becker is one of two deputies on the Door County Sheriff’s Office roster who serve as humane officers, those who respond to incidents in which an animal is involved.
When Becker arrived on the scene, she saw the deer that was hit, a doe, was dead, and the woman whose vehicle struck the deer wasn’t injured, Chief Deputy Kyle Veeser said.
But the doe was pregnant and apparently gave birth to a fawn shortly after it was hit and dying. The newborn fawn was in a ditch on the side of the road at the scene.
“When the officer (Becker) arrived, she noticed the fawn in the ditch,” Veeser said. “It got up and started walking toward her.”
Becker then retrieved a blanket from her vehicle, explained to the woman driver from the accident that she was going to rescue the fawn, wrapped the newborn in the blanket and transported it to Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary in Green Bay, a wildlife rehabilitation center and refuge about 43 miles from the scene of the accident that cares for more than 6,500 orphaned and injured animals annually.
A post on the sheriff’s office’s Facebook page indicates the orphaned fawn is likely to remain at the sanctuary, “where it will hopefully live a good life.”
Veeser said of the hundreds of vehicle-vs.-deer accidents that have happened in Door County since he’s been with the sheriff’s office, this one’s twist is something entirely new to him.
“Not in my 25 years have I heard of anything like this in our area,” Veeser said.
