Corpus Christi city officials are taking feedback from residents to help shape the upcoming fiscal year budget as the city navigates a projected $7 million deficit.
The city under state law is required to adopt a balanced budget — and doing so in this case may translate to higher fees for some types of services and potential cuts to others, officials have said.
Although residents have options to voice their opinions through contacting City Council members or attending council meetings, a new avenue is at their fingertips: an online survey.
In a news release announcing the alternative, city officials described gathering public input as important in “ensuring that the priorities and needs of Corpus Christi residents are reflected in the City’s financial planning.”
“The online survey will provide an accessible platform for all residents to share their perspectives on City services, infrastructure, public safety, parks and recreation, and other key areas. This will be one of many tools used to shape the budget process,” the email states.
Although current forecasts of the shortfall reach about $7 million, it’s possible the figure could change in upcoming weeks. Presently available appraisal district values are considered preliminary and are not certified.
There is also a question pending on potential property tax revenue losses related to CPS Energy’s purchase of two local power plants, as well as properties acquired by the Corpus Christi Housing Authority.
City staff is anticipated to present its proposed budget in July. Council members, however, make the final decisions on the budget, which must be adopted before October.
The survey will be available through June 15, according to the news release.
