OKLAHOMA CITY — For the second time in five days, Florida softball will be playing for its season.
Sunday, the Gators remained undefeated under Tim Walton in Super Regionals with a win over Georgia.
Now, UF finds itself in a similar situation just one day into the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City. The Gators fell 3-0 to Texas in the first game of the WCWS – the program’s first WCWS-opening loss since 2019. That season was also the last time Florida got swept on the sport’s biggest stage.
Florida’s opponent Friday night is Tennessee, which suffered its own gut-punch Thursday with a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to four-time defending national champion Oklahoma on a two-out, walk-off three-run homer by Ella Parker. Now, the Volunteers, and their ace – SEC Pitcher of the Year Karlyn Pickens – must recover in just about 24 hours.
Two teams that were once ranked in the top three in the nation, and one will be going home on the tournament’s second day. It’ll surely be interesting theater from Devon Park.
“We don’t play the same team tomorrow that we did today. Sometimes when you get to this side of the bracket, you have to figure out how to turn the page because you can look at yesterday and yesterday’s team is not playing us tomorrow,” Florida coach Tim Walton said. “So we have to do a really good job at turning the page and figure things out.”
